Breaking the backboard

2020

A performance (25’) and video (10’)
MDLXIII – Frédéric Liver & Marinette Dozeville

Breaking the Backboard is a collective performative utopia.
A basketball game without hoops and without a ball — a game without outcome, where the notion of result disappears to make room for the pure intensity of movement. By removing the efficiency of the gesture, it becomes choreographic; by removing the goal of the game, it becomes poetic.

A performance of overflow, Breaking the Backboard engages the body in raw physicality — between energy, rhythm, and self-surpassing. It is a field where boundaries blur: between dance and sport, seriousness and play, stage and off-stage.

Basketball here becomes a certain idea of dance: a writing of the rebound, a circulation of energies, a space of shared composition.
A horizontal utopia, the piece cultivates the porous play between players (artists) and witnesses (spectators).
